Paul Kiefer

Arcane AD 105 Outhere Music France

Michele Carreca: Giacomo Gorzanis - Solo Lute Music

Giacomo Gorzanis

blind, Apulian and citizen of the magnificent city of Trieste

Italy, almost the exact half of XVI century. A lute virtuoso of the Renaissance, Giacomo Gorzanis, coming from the South East of Italy, establish himself in the far North East city of Trieste, at that time under the protection of the Habsburg's family against Venice ambitions. Nothing is known about his life before that time, exept what he writes in the front cover of his books. His music follows the styles of the time, both in the genres, forms and music ornamentation, while showing at the same time a strong recognizable sign.

This cd is the first monography on Gorzanis's lute works. It contains a consistent majority of world first recordings, coming from the fourth book of lute tablature, published posthumously by his son Massimiliano, plus a selection of pieces coming from other sources. The booklet contains biographical notes and a short presentation of the music choiced by the interpreter.

Scherzi Musicali o.l.v. Nicolas Achten: Antonio Bertali

La Maddalena

Through the combination of sacred and profane that she embodies, the profoundly human personality of Mary Magdalene greatly inspired artists of the Baroque era, whether painters, poets or composers. It was in the sphere of influence of Italian oratorios, highly prized at  court of Vienna, that Antonio Bertali devoted a most moving sepolcro to her in 1663, a genre traditionally played during Holy Week. In 1617, in Mantua, it was in the form of theatrical interludes that she was honoured by court composers such as Salomone Rossi, Muzio Effrem and Claudio Monteverdi, who wrote the prologue for this other Maddalena. Scherzi Musicali propose the first World recording of these works.

Michele Carreca : Mr Dowland's Fortune

Dowland repeatedly expressed his desire to have his instrumental music properly printed, together with a treatise on the right procedure for playing the lute, but he then let the matter drop, just when the position he had attained as lutenist of the royal court could have given him the peace of mind for drawing up such a work. On the basis of his biography and his rather uneven career it is not entirely clear what obstacles may have prevented him fromcompleting this project. [...] We may never know exactly why we have been unable to enjoy this treasure. In the end perhaps it was Fortune (the Goddess of Luck) who decided that such a significant quantity of Dowland's music would be handed down to us.[from the liner notes by Michele Carreca].

For his first solo album, the lutenist Michele Carreca proposes a pondered choice of the most beautiful pieces for solo lute by John Dowland, whose compositions are universally considered an unquestionable milestone for lute repertoire.

Jacques Le Polonois: Pi├Ęces de luth

Artist: Paul Kieffer (lute)

Release date: December 1, 2015

List of vendors on Paul Kieffer's page.

In this much-awaited recording of a neglected but critical area of 16th-century lute repertory and history, Paul Kieffer, a rising young star of the lute world, performs the works of Jacques Le Polonois. Lauded by J.-B. Besard, Marin Mersenne, Mary Burwell's lute tutor, and several others, Le Polonois was credited with inventing a new style of lute playing, which his successors would further develop into a repertory for the ten- and eleven-course lute. As his name suggests, he was born in Poland and immigrated to France, where he spent his career as royal lutenist to Kings Henri III and IV. Contemporary accounts refer to his "strong plucking" and remarkable improvisatory abilities. Paul Kieffer performs here 28 pieces by Le Polonois (half of his surviving works), including some of the earliest surviving pr├ęludes non mesur├ęs, courantes, and voltes for the lute, and what is most likely the oldest surviving sarabande for any instrument.

Miguel Yisrael - Vienna 1676

1676 was an important year for European lute music -- Thomas Mace published his famous volume Musick's Monument, and the two Austrian composers and lutenists Wolff Jacob Lauffensteiner and Johann Georg Weichenberger were born. Although these composers' works were stylistically similar to the German school of lute music, they carved out a distinct and independent Austrian movement; this new recording by acclaimed lutenist Miguel Yisrael celebrates their achievements through a programe dedicated to their partitas.

Ludy Vrijdag, tenor & David van Ooijen,

lute songs by Morley, Campion and Dowland

This CD is the long-awaited result of over 20 years of cooperation with tenor Ludy Vrijdag. I already accompanied Ludy on guitar even before I played lute, and as a duo we had lessons with the late Robert Spencer, in the Deller course in the South of France and at the Royal College of Music in London. Ludy, who´┐Żs golden locks indeed are turned to silver by now, always postponed making this CD until he felt himself good enough for the undertaking. Now, near the end of his solo career, he finally had the courage to record his favourite lute songs by Dowland, Campion and Morley. This CD is for sale from me. You can send an e-mail if you are interested in buying a copy.

Anders Ericson - Relic

French baroque lute music

Anders Ericson´┐Żs debut solo CD released on Daphne Records is focused on both famous and less well known French composers for the baroque lute. A majority of the programme is not previously recorded and therefore available now for the first time to the listener. This sublime and intriguing music by Fran´┐Żois Dufaut, Jean Mercure, Jacques Gallot and Germain Pinel performed by Anders Ericson shows the splendour and colour of 17th century France.

Zefiro Torna - Tears of Joy

C´┐Żcile Kempenaers: soprano
Didier Fran´┐Żois: Nyckelharpa
Jurgen De bruyn: renaissance lute, archlute, baroque guitar, chant
Philippe Malfeyt (Luthomania, Romanesque, Rans): renaissance lute, cittern, theorbo, baroque guitar, percussion

A 'good song' and dancing music were never far away in the early 17th century England of Elisabeth I and the Stuarts. Traditional grounds, allemandes, pavanes and galliards, country dances, jigs and catches could be heard right next to a folk song, a melancholy lute song, an Italian madrigal or three-voiced 'canzonettes'. It was a time when music was threaded with references to exuberant court plays or masques and to the tragedies or comedies of the Shakespearian theatre. Which seems plausible considering the number of composers that were affiliated to the renowned theatre company of The King's Men.Master John 'semper dolans' Dowland and his contemporary Robert Johnson salute the beginning of a new century with their exquisite songs and superb lute music. When thinking about vocal instrumental consort music the names of amongst others Thomas Morley, Philip Rosseter and Richard Allison need to be noted. Composers such as Henry Lawes and William Webb, known before most for their high quality songbooks succeeded them. And finally, somewhere around 1650, we end up with the successful publisher of the manual for English dancing music, entitled "The Dancing Master", John Playford. The ensemble Zefiro Torna unites the best of the Belgian historical and traditional music scene and provides a delicious musical blend of sumptuous strings of lutes, cittern, guitar, theorbo and nyckelharpa, entwined with the crystal clear voice of soprano C´┐Żcile Kempenaers. Tears of Joy offer you a delicate balance between pure beauty, tragedy, introspectiveness and cheerfulness, piquancies and a groovy feel.

Evangelina Mascardi, tiorba; M´┐Żnica Pustilnik, tiorbino; Marco Beasley, canto

Encantar put together a program and gave it the French title La d´┐Żclinaison de la femme, which plays on two senses of the French word d´┐Żclinaison. This derives ultimately from Latin declinare, which, like its borrowing in English decline, means both ´┐Żrefuse, reject´┐Ż and ´┐Żgive all forms of (a noun)´┐Ż. In its sense of ´┐Żdeclination, rejection´┐Ż, d´┐Żclinaison refers to Margaret of Austria as the prototype of the rejected and grieving woman. Rejected, not just by Charles VIII, the husband she had been promised, but also by life and even by happiness. In its sense of ´┐Żdeclension´┐Ż, properly a grammatical sense, d´┐Żclinaison here refers to the various forms in which Margaret´┐Żs melancholy manifests itself. All these
forms are like so many facets of her tristesse.

CD Bel Ayre
Lieselot De Wilde - soprano
Pieter Theuns - theorbo, lute, baroque guitar
Pieter Vandeveire - viola da gamba

The Bel Ayre web site www.belayre.be says that Bel Ayre literally
and figuratively stands for 'beautiful songs', in the conviction
of the fact that what speaks to the heart is what matters
ultimately.
This is a CD that truly does speak to the heart. And very clearly
too. Although not a native English speaker, the clear diction
and pronunciation of English song texts by Lieselot De Wilde
makes it a pleasure to listen as the story of each song unfolds.
Even with the difficult words of the opening song Fain would I
cage that note - a phrase that is as foreign to modern English
speakers as non English speakers, they are clear as well as
beautifully sung.
The solemn and more dramatic From Rosy Bowers is followed
by the mournful In darkness let me dwell which is sensitively
accompanied by Pieter Theuns on his Paul Thomson arch-lute. This lute has a
pure delicacy of sound that was the perfect companion to
the voice. The fourth piece on the Cd is The Blessed Virgin's Expostulation
by Henry Purcell.
Lieselot De Wilde sings this with drama
and pathos and the cries to Gabriel are truly a mother's heart
wrenching plea for divine help.
If there was a piece on this CD that could be sent out into the
world in the hope of encouraging non early music enthusiasts
to explore this music it would be In a Garden so Green a charming
song performed here in folk-song style arrangement.
The CD concludes with Christopher Simpson's Divisions upon
a ground in Bes played so well together by Pieter Theuns and
Pieter Vandeveire. The two Pieter's obviously enjoy playing
their instruments and also playing together and it would seem
that they wish to convert us all to the joys of theorbo and gamba.
And I think they may well succeed!
This is a very enjoyable little CD well worth a place in every
music library.

Miguel Yisrael - The Court of Bayreuth

Anthony Bailes: GAUTIER , Apollon orateur

The association of Denis Gaultier with Apollo in a 17th c. lute manuscript is not as audacious as it might at first appear: the lutenist was held in great esteem by his contemporaries; indeed, for many he was the embodiment of genius on the lute, the ´┐Żnonpareil´┐Ż, and one of the very few capable of ´┐Żspeaking´┐Ż to his listeners. At first glance, his compositions seem little different from those of his collegues, but further examination reveals a sophistication unparalleled in any other lute music of the period. One is immediately struck by the economy of the writing, in which no note is superfluous and the musical structure reduced to its essence. This minimalist approach is even more apparent in later, published versions which show subtle traces of revision. Denis Gaultier exploited the instrument to the full, and in doing so take the art of lute-playing to a realm undreamt of by elder colleagues. His music placed great demands on the lutenist, lute and listener alike for, knowing what could be achieved, Gaultier chose to push the instrument to its limits, and everyone else along with it. http://www.ramee.org/0904gb.html

Mignarda: Au Pres de Vous: 16th century chansons for lute & voice

We're happy to announce the release of our 6th CD, Au Pres de Vous. Recorded in the warm and vibrant acoustic of an old country church, our latest release explores the important marriage of music, poetry and dance tunes of sixteenth century France. The composers of these chansons and psalm settings - including Sermisy, Janequin, Crecquillon, Lassus, and our favorite, Philip Van Wilder - were inspired by the eloquent grace and the passionate artifice of poets Marot and Ronsard, among others. Notable among the several previously unrecorded chansons are three completely unique settings of 'Pour un plaisir', a forgotten 16th century hit. Lute solos include dances and preludes from the publications of Attaignant and Phalese, and ricercars and fantasias from Marco dal l'Aquila and 'il divino' Francesco da Milano. Au pres de vous can be purchased now directly from us at http://www.mignarda.com/cds . Single-song and full-album MP3 downloads will be available soon at Amazon.com, CD Baby, iTunes, or your favorite download site.

New Pantagruel CD

We are happy to announce that our new CD, Laydie Louthians Lilte is now available from www.pantagruel.de. Click here to Order.
This time the scene moves from Elizabethan England of our last CD Elizium to Jacobean Scotland,  presenting the whole gamut of ´┐Żwordly´┐Ż music that was played back in early 17th century Scotland. So alongside the Scots dances and songs there are lute songs by John Dowland, Robert Johnson, Robert Jones & Thomas Ford and English Broadside ballads.
There are a number of those ´┐ŻWorld Premiere Recording´┐Ż things, including the ´┐ŻYee Gods of Love´┐Ż, an amazingly beautiful lament of distant Irish origin, plus the equally memorable but more up-tempo ´┐ŻOver the Mountains´┐Ż, ´┐ŻThen Wilt thou goe´┐Ż. One of the abslute highlights is the just over 8 minute long epic ´┐ŻVenus & Adonis´┐Ż, combining excerpts from the famous Shakespeare´┐Żs poem, a ´┐Żnever before recorded´┐Ż ballad text (sorry to mention it again, but some people really get off on this never before recorded stuff) and lots of wild cittern and Bass-lute ´┐Żriffing´┐Ż (All of the cittern pieces have also never been recorded before J).
It was recorded in Colnrade, a small village in North Germany, (you can see a ´┐ŻMaking of Video´┐Ż, listen to MP3 excerpts at out MySpace Blog here).
The local church has been used for a number of award winning recordings and had an absolutely fantastic acoustic.
It comes in one of those new fangled fancy Discbox-Slider, with a CD in good old fashioned Vinyl look and a fold out text sheet.

Old Gautiers Nightinghall, Anthony Bailes

http://www.ramee.org/0707gb.html

Though variant tunings having already appeared during the first years of the sixteenth century, the first part of the seventeenth century saw a great number of tunings emerge, the most successful being those occurring in Pierre Ballard´┐Żs 1631 and 1638 publications of Tablatures de Luth de Differents Autheurs sur les Accords Nouveaux. Three out of these four accords nouveaux produce a superb resonance, but all share the disadvantage of being restricted to certain keys, modulation being often accompanied by a distinct deterioration in tone quality. It was no doubt this factor which contributed to their decline in popularity and the subsequent acceptance of the fourth one, the d minor tuning, which was less susceptible to this problem and remained the standard lute tuning until the instrument´┐Żs demise in the late eighteenth century.
The accords nouveaux gained widespread acceptance and inspired players to produce some of the most sublime music ever created for the lute ´┐Ż some of which can be heard on this recording, played by the great English lutenist Anthony Bailes.

Weiss, Concerto for two lutes, Suites

"All the music here comes from two related manuscripts, only recently discovered. They were located in the library of Count Harrach, amongst the collections held in the family Schloss at Rohrau, east of Vienna (and home to an important private art collection). Prior to the Harrach library being transferred from Vienna to Rohrau in 1970, most of the music manuscripts in it were sold. The significance of these two manuscripts was perhaps not recognised at the time. One of the two manuscripts carries the title ´┐ŻWeiss Sylvio ´┐Ż Lautenmusik´┐Ż; there are 64 pages in the manuscript and pretty well all of the works in it can safely be attributed to Weiss. The other manuscript is headed ´┐ŻLaten Musik von unbekannten Componisten´┐Ż (Lute music by unknown composers); this manuscript contains 65 pages and, again, pretty well all can be confidently attributed to Weiss, either because they are versions of compositions known to be his from other sources or on clear stylistic grounds. Some pieces from the manuscripts appeared in the anthology Klingende Sch´┐Żtze aus Schloss Rohrau, issued by Cavalli (CCD 446) in 2005 along with works by Angelo Ragazzi, Vivaldi, Francesco Alborea and Gottfried Finger. Now we have premiere recordings of more material from the manuscripts, most notably the Concerto for two lutes. I believe that this is the first time that the music for one of Weiss´┐Żs duos has been found complete. There is other music here which was already known, though it turns up in company with different companions as it were, in different sequences of movements and so on."

Corbetta, La Ghirlanda Mosicale

(http://www.dynamic.it).
