De Cd Les Larmes van Edward Martin met de Complete Fresneau is eindelijk uit!
De onterecht vergeten componist Fresneau was een Frans luitist die het grootste deel van zijn leven als luitleraar in Leiden doorbracht. Zijn tot nu 33 bekende werken voor luit en 5 voor gitaar zitten verspreid over het Goëss I manuscript en het Ms 40626 vroeger in Berlijn, dat nu in Krakau in de Bibliotheka Jagiellonska bewaard wordt. In dit laatste handschrift herkent Jan Burgers, die het tekstboekje schreef, duidelijk de hand B als die van Fresneau zelf.
Is het omdat ik Ed Martin deze werken reeds hoorde vertolken enkele jaren geleden tijdens zijn concerten hier in België, het klinkt me allemaal zo vertrouwd en vooral rustgevend. Zijn zorgvuldig afgewogen tempi, stijlgetrouwe versieringen delicaat luitspel van het zuiverste gehalte. Daarom kan ik deze cd van harte aanbevelen.

This is a performance of the works of Johannes Fresneau, whom Dutch Scholar Jan Burgers recently discovered. Although the iconographic sources of paintings of lutes in 17th Century Netherlands are widespread, there have been no surviving Dutch baroque lute music examples. Therefore, this music represents a new composer, but a new genre – Dutch baroque lute music. Both sublime and beautiful, this music is of high quality and unique. The pieces run the gamut of thoughtful preludes, danceable gigues, relaxing chaconnes, lively folk tunes, with a heart-wrenching Tombeau for good measure; basically, everything that you would want to hear on a baroque lute.
The recording is available on disc, complete with extensive liner notes from Jan Berger, the Dutch scholar who discovered Fresneau and researched his life extensively.
