Naast de gebruikelijke expositie van bouwers, het samenspel en het vrij podium gaat Adriaan Lauwers een programma brengen op theorbe en barokgitaar rond Philippe Vermeulen die aan het Brussels hof van Albrecht en Isabella werkte en door hen in 1612 naar Italië gestuurd werd om daar theorbe te leren. Tussendoor vertelt Adriaan anekdotes uit de briefwisseling en reconstrueert hij met klank en woord hoe deze studiereis moet zijn verlopen. De link met Brussel is doorgaans dus prominent aanwezig. Luitbouwer Milan Barbé geeft een lezing over nieuwe methodes en technieken voor het bestuderen van luiten, het onderwerp van zijn promotieonderzoek aan de universiteit van Gent.

Outre l’exposition des luthiers, le jeu d’ensemble et le podium libre, Adriaan Lauwers présentera un programme au théorbe et à la guitare baroque autour de Philippe Vermeulen qui travailla à la cour d’Albrecht et Isabelle. Ces derniers envoyèrent le musicien en Italie, pour y apprendre le théorbe. Adriaan contera des anecdotes issues de la correspondance du musicien et reconstituera la manière dont ce voyage d’études a dû se passer. Le tout en paroles et en musique. Le lien avec Bruxelles y est omniprésent. Milan Barbé donnera une conférence sur les nouvelles méthodes et techniques d’étude des luths, le sujet de sa recherche doctorale à l’Université de Gand.

In addition to the usual exhibition of builders, ensemble playing, and open stage, Adriaan Lauwers will present a program for theorbo and baroque guitar featuring Philippe Vermeulen, who worked at the Brussels court of Albrecht and Isabella and was sent by them to Italy in 1612 to study theorbo. Throughout the program, Adriaan will share anecdotes from their correspondence and reconstruct, using sound and words, how this study trip must have gone. The connection with Brussels is therefore generally prominent. Luthier Milan Barbé will give a lecture on new methods and techniques for studying lutes, the subject of his doctoral research at Ghent University.
Philippe Vermeulen, Il Fiammengo della Tiorba (Adriaan Lauwers) (11.30 AM)
In 1612, Philippe Vermeulen set off from Brussels to Rome at the behest of Isabella of Spain and Albrecht of Austria, governors of the Southern Netherlands. The upheavals in the musical landscape at the beginning of the 17th century in Italy aroused the curiosity of all Western European courts. Besides the emergence of new forms of expression – such as opera, the recitative or the toccata – several fascinating instruments also saw the light of day there. Philippe was commissioned to master one such new instrument, the theorbo, and then to share his knowledge acquired there on his return. None other than “Il Tedesco della Tiorba” Giovanni Girolamo Kapsperger, the pre-eminent virtuoso at the time, taught him the tricks of the trade. From a correspondence between the consulate in Rome and the court in Mariemont, one can read how Philippe fared during his two-year stay. From the consulate being deeply concerned as he locked himself up for whole days to study to the long-awaited financial support from the Low Countries when Philippe finally began to make progress. Using pieces by his teacher and contemporaries – on theorbo, baroque guitar and with singing – and anecdotes from the letters, we try to bring Philippe Vermeulen’s journey and study period to life: the music he must have heard, songs that resonated, improvisations he could have played himself, composition exercises he could have written… a tribute to the “Il Fiammingo della Tiorba”.
Milan Barbé: New Methodologies and Techniques for Studying Lutes (14.00 AM)
Binnen zijn promotie-onderzoek aan de Universiteit van Gent heeft Milan Barbé een aantal historische luiten onderzocht met foto-grammetrie waarbij de luit wordt rondgewenteld en gefotografeerd. Door alle beelddata digitaal te combineren ontstaat een digitaal 3-dimensionaal beeld waarmee luiten onderling kunnen worden vergeleken. Milan hoopt hiermee patronen op te sporen, zoals een overeenkomst per regio, en trends die in de tijd veranderen. Deze methode wordt beperkt door het klein aantal historische luiten. Verder wil Milan akoestische aspecten bestuderen met behulp van de ‘Finite Element’ methode: hierbij bouw je bijvoorbeeld denkbeeldig een bovenblad op uit kleine blokjes hout van een kubieke millimeter. Door de kracht op een blokje te berekenen ten gevolge van de posities van de 6 buur-blokjes kun je uiteindelijk trillingen van het bovenblad berekenen. Dit zou interessant kunnen zijn voor bouwers: met name het effect van verandering in bebalking zou voorspelbaar zijn.
